Jan 15th: Repo! The Genetic Opera

This is a little late, but then again, I was out REALLY late last night. I'll start from the beginning:

A friend of mine was looking for someone to go to a show with her, and she asked me if I was interested. I love trying new things and being spontaneous, so I said sure. So, we went to a private screening in Foxboro of *drumroll please* Repo! The Genetic Opera.

A short summary: A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer.

Now I know what some of you may be thinking. Repo? Isn't that supposed to be a gothic rock opera? A movie without an audience, a movie largely panned by critics and even stated to be one of the worst movies of all time (*coughBattlefieldEarthcough*)?!?!?!

Hold your horses folks.

I admit, it's far from a *great* film. It's no Oscar winner (Although 3 of its songs are currently on the shortlist for the Academy Awards). But it does have an air about it. It reminds me of Rocky Horror in that it's DEFINITELY going to become a cult film. Actually, it wouldn't be hard to argue that it already is! It was pretty gory, but it wasn't scary at all. Yes, Paris Hilton was in it, but she actually didn't suck. It's kind of hard for her to screw up the part of a spoiled heiress. Her presence wasn't distracting and she held her own. I can't believe I just said that. But it's true. But, I think the real star of the show is Sarah Brightman. Her voice is incredible, and she stole the spotlight in all of her scenes. God, she's amazing.

Terrance, Me, and Darren

The director, Darren Lynn Bousman, came to the showing. You might have seen his work in Saw II, III and IV. Alexa Vega was also there, and she has to be one of the nicest people I've ever met. She was pretty funny too, and even did an imitation of Fergie's "my humps" dance. The creator/writer/star of the show, Terrance Zdunich, also came to the screening. He also did all of the artwork featured in the film.

My friend Amanda, Alexa Vega, and I

All in all, it was a pretty kickass night. Hundreds of fans showed up, dressed as their favorite characters to compete in a costume contest. There were photographers and reporters, and poster signings too. It was definitely "an experience." But not one I regret. And I'm gonna be humming some of the songs for quite a while...

The trailer for the movie, just in case you're interested.

GRRRRRRRR

Repo! came to Indianapolis the DAY BEFORE THIS. If I had had a car, I was going to go. Sadly, it didn't work out. I had such a huge crush on Alexa Vega when I was younger too. :D
